Two men jailed on kidnapping charge

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Two men remained jailed Wednesday, a day after they were suspected of kidnapping a woman and forcing her to lead them to a person who allegedly had stolen a safe from them containing cash and cocaine, police said.

Tony Borrego Jr., 48, and Angel Rudy Rodriguez, 30, were charged with felony aggravated kidnapping and ordered held on $75,000 bail each, according to police.

The two were searching for a person who took the safe with $11,000 in cash and “a large amount of cocaine” in it, according to police.

After the men drove the woman and other friends home from a party at Rodriguez’s residence, they discovered the safe was gone and Rodriguez threatened to “blast everyone” who had attended the party unless he got it back, police said.

They forced the woman into their car and ordered her to give directions to the suspected thief’s home, police said. Officers caught up to them and arrested both men in the 9100 block of Ridge Mill. Rodriguez was allegedly in possession of an AK-47 semi-automatic rifle. It was not clear if the drugs and cash were recovered. The woman was unhurt, police said.

Man Charged In Infant Assault

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

A man was jailed Saturday for a mid-May incident in which his girlfriend’s 6-month-old infant suffered a skull fracture.

Juan Javi De los Santos-Salais, 20, was ordered held under $100,000 bail Saturday in connection with the incident involving his live-in girlfriend’s infant.

Investigators said he was taking care of the infant at the apartment he shared with the baby’s mother while she was at work May 14.

An arrest warrant affidavit said De los Santos-Salais told police the infant “threw himself” backward, hitting the back of his head on a crib rail, as he attempted to pick up the crying baby.

But University Hospital officials noted that the infant had a complex skull fracture and bleeding to the left side of the brain that was not consistent with the man’s explanation, according to the affidavit.

Doctors said the injuries were the result of significant impact to the child’s head.

De los Santos-Salais was booked into the Bexar County Jail charged with injury to a child, knowingly causing serious bodily injury-a felony.

The baby’s condition was not known.

Legislative Aide Held In Fatality

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

An aide to state Rep. Wayne Christian who was an intern for Gov. Rick Perry’s re-election campaign was arrested and charged Friday in an early morning hit-and-run fatality in Austin.

Gabrielle Jane Nestande, 23, was charged with failure to stop and render aide, a third-degree felony, police said.

The victim was identified as Courtney Paige Griffin, 30.

A neighbor found the woman’s body in his driveway at about 5 a.m., police said.  They said they were uncertain when the incident occurred.

At an afternoon news conference, Austin police said Nestande took her vehicle to the home of an acquaintance after the incident, then was driven to work at the capitol.

“This morning . . . (the) Texas Department of Public Safety requested to question one of Rep. Christian’s employees,” Jon McClellan, chief of staff for Christian, R-Center, said in a statement.

“Rep. Christian and his office are cooperating fully with authorities as needed.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all the parties involved.”

Police said the vehicle, a black BMW 325 I-series, was found after a trip from an anonymous caller at 9 a.m.  The caller told police they saw a vehicle with a broken windshield.

On a LinkedIn profile for Nestande, she’s listed as an administrative aide at the Capitol since January.  She’s also listed as working as an intern for Perry’s 2010 campaign for 10 months.

Perry spokesman Mark Miner confirmed Nestande was an unpaid intern during the campaign.

The Legislature honored Nestande with a resolution Thursday on her work at the Capitol.

“Since joining the staff, Ms. Nestande has managed her responsibilities in an exceptional manner, her professionalism has helped assure the efficient operation of the office and her commitment and hard work have been greatly appreciated by her colleagues,” the resolution said.
