Felony Arson Charges in Car Torching

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Felony arson charges were filed Tuesday against a San Antonio man who SAPD say conspired with a car owner to steal her car and burn it to collect on the vehicles insurance policy.  Robert hidalgo was arrested early Tuesday and charged with arson and conspiracy to commit arson and was ordered held at Bexar County Jail on $35,000 bail.

Arson investigators said Hidalgo and another man with ties to a local auto dealership conspired with the owner of a 2009 Ford Fusion to take the car while it was parked at a restaurant in the 13000 block of Wetmore Road in early October.  A few hours after the car was reported stolen, fire fighters responded to a call that the Fusion was on fire.  Investigators determined  it had been torched and identified Hidalgo and the other man as suspects.  Hidalgo was arrested and no one else has been charged.
